Solaris 11.1 timeouts, sendmail

I have been running two Solaris 10 systems as internal SMTP relays for years with no problems.  These systems are running ZFS, patches are maintained, and other than my custom sendmail config, little needed to be done.  Unfortunately, the hardware falls into the dinosaur category.  The hosts are Sun X2100M2 systems with 8GB memory and 2x500GB SATA II drives in a ZFS mirror.  The CPU is a dual core Opteron 1210 at 1.8GHz.
So I installed Solaris 11.1 on the same hardware with the same ZFS layout, same sendmail & related files (access, sendmail.cf, etc) and all seemed fine.  However, our external mail systems run an anti-spam product that can use these internal hosts to validate recipients.  It does this through a short SMTP handshake as if it were sending mail to the recipient.  That is not worth a discussion as to how & why they check recipients in this manner.  However, what happens is every hour or two, with NO regularity or predictability, the newly installed SMTP hosts just timeout when the
