Need Information on Spurce Database for HCM 9.0 to 9.2 Upgrade on MS SQL Server Platform

We have been reviewing the upgrade documentation and training materials, however still need clarification on the upgrade process for MS SQL platform (MS SQL Server 2008 R2), English language only. It appears that we will not be able to use the Source Image for our source database during the Initial Pass. What are the high level steps to get to the Initial Upgrade pass? e.g. do we need to install a "traditional" demo and if so where do we find documentation on it, once it is installed do we need to patch it using PUM, etc. Our current tools version in 8.53.05.
