The available PeopleTools version does not match the approved upgrade path??

 We are in the process of upgrading from Financials 8.8, PeopleTools version 8.52 to Financials 9.1, PeopleTools 8.53.  We've been told by a previous engineer and folks on the community that the approved upgrade path is to first go from Financials 8.8, PeopleTools 8.52 to Financials 9.1, PeopleTools 8.52, and then finally to upgrade to PeopleTools 8.53.  The problem is that currently the only version of Tools that is available is 8.53, so we no longer appear to have that choice.  Also, the installation document says that it is okay to go to PeopleTools 8.53 at the beginning instead of waiting.
Can you please clarify whether we are taking the correct path if we go to PeopleTools 8.53 as part of the initial upgrade from Financials 8.8 to 9.1?
