SES Search for items with leading zeros

We have SES deployed and are using it in multiple places to replaces the SQL search.  We have found that placing a '*" after a text string will act as a wildcard but we have been unable to determine how to search by item number since our item numbers contain leading zeros.  We tried to put a *123, but we have not had any success.  Is there any way to use SES to search for items with leading zeros?
