Help creating Activity Guide (not progressing)

I created a simple activity guide for the creation of a contract.  Some steps dependent on prior steps.  Of course, when I click the first step of the guide (create new contract) it opens up in the right pane.  I then create the contract and save it.  My problem is the activity guide in the workcenter (left pane) doesn't progress with it.  Am I missing a step in the setup?  The only way I've gotten the guide to progress is to manually do them in the instance (set it to a particular status).  Any guidance is appreciated.  Thanks

I am on version 9.2 and Tools version is 8.53
