PS_APP_HOME and 9.0 applications (FMS, HCM, Portal)

As part of our staged roll out of new hardware, ptools upgrade and application upgrade, we will go live with apps remaining at Ver 9.0 and PTools upgraded from 8.49.11 to 8.53.08.  The application upgrade will start immediately afterward. 

From what I've read the use of the PS_APP_HOME and the  "decoupled" ps_homes is not supported until app version 9.1.  (It seems that the PS_CFG_HOME is supported, but not the PS_APP_HOME.)

Does anyone know if this has changed, or has anyone run something other than the "classic" configuration with apps at 9.0?
