trying to use Pluggable Encryption Technology for simple MD5 hash

This is my first foray into using the PET tools and I am not understanding my results.  I need to run a md5 hash on an ascii string. We have the OpenSSL encryption library loaded.  I created a new Algorithm Chain containing 3 steps: PSUnicodeToAscii, md5_generate, PSAsciiToUnicode. I created  a new profile containing the new algorithm chain.  When I use the 'Test Encryption Profile' page for the new profile, I plug in a sample string and the result is not what I consider an ascii string.

For example, I tried hashing this string
