Peopletools 8.53 w/ Windows 7, java 1.7 needed?

Hello,

I'm looking into upgrading Peopletools from 8.51 to 8.53 and I'm confused about the java version that is needed. We're using IE 9 on Windows 7 and currently have Java 1.6_26 installed. Do we need to upgrade the java version to 1.7? I see that jre 1.7 is required, but I wasn't sure if that was for the web server/app server (we're on AIX) or for the browser. I'm not finding this information under certifications. Any information would be appreciated.
