Upgrade HRMS9/PT8.50.18 to HRMS9.2/PT8.53.10

We are upgrading from PeopleTools 8.50.18 to PeopleTools 8.53.10 and Application HRMS 9.0 to HRMS 9.2, we are also upgrade from Windows 2008 to Windows 2012.  We have installed PT8.53 Change Assistant on a Windows 2012 server, and started to run through our initial pass.  However we are having trouble connecting two tier to our copy of production database which would still be at 8.50.18 because we haven't reached the step of running the rel scripts.  I know that 8.50 is not certified on Window 2012 and I am wondering if this could be our problem.  Should we be using
