What are the funtions of sec_group_loc_matrix.update_ind and sec_group_loc_matrix.select_ind

Hi, we are on RMS 13.2.5. We set all records in sec_group_loc_matrix, update_ind to 'N' and select_ind to 'Y'. That works fine, but I wonder what affection these two indexes have. What object can grantee to select or update according to these indexes?
