Upgrade Image versus Update image

I'm trying to understand the new upgrade process for FSCM 9.0 -> 9.2 upgrade.  FSCM Update image 5 was recently released and FSCM upgrade image 9.2.001 was also released.  Both are sizeable downloads (~20gb+).  I'm sure there is a valid reason, but can't seem to find the reason.  Both are Vanila Demo databases with one difference that Upgrade image has all the "Required for Install" and "Required for upgrade" patches.  Is this the only difference? If so, what is the need for Update image? Can we not use the Upgrade image as Update image as well?

Can some one provide the reason(s)?
