Peoplesoft Lab upgrade

Hi

can any one please explain what is peoplesoft lab upgrade , i know tools upgrade and application upgrade, My second question is incase of peopletools conversion in lab upgrade i heard certain setup and transaction tables(application tables ) are reffered , just wanted to know why application tables are being reffered in first place , if so how to arrive at which tables will get reffered in each module.
