Redirected restore for rman

Hi Experts,

                  Recently we have refreshed one database from the backup of production database using redirected retore command.I have script ready for that but I want to understand how rman works here.

I mean to say how rman backup copy is redirected to differnt server.Any architectural document or reference will be very helpful for me to understand the internal.
