Tools compatabilty question

A client is on Portal 9.1, CS 9.0 and FSCM 9.1 - all at Tools 8.50.XX.  They only use Portal as a fly thru.  Can they upgrade Portal to 8.53 first and then the other 2 later?  Anyone know for sure?  I am about to try this out but would like to know first if anyone has a definitive answer.  Thanks!
