Formatting Dollar Amounts in 8.53 Pivot Grids

Pivot Grids on Tools 8.53.  Is there a way to format an amount field for thousands places (commas) and decimal precision?  I know I can do a TO_CHAR if I was just using Query, but since it is then a CHAR field, it does not appear to allow me to Sum it the pivot grids.
