Using the Left Outer Join in the Query Tool

I use the Query Tool a lot and my left outer joins never seem to work.  If any of you have used the left outer join effectively in the Query Tool can you send me the SQL so that I can see how it looks compared to my left outer join querys.  Is there a trick to making them work?
