Formatting nPloded Rows in Excel

We are on PeopleTools 8.53.06 and are developing nVision reports. An age-old issue is coming up: how to get formats to copy into nPloded cells.  We have tried things that have worked in the past such as styles and settings on the Layout Options. But nothing we have tried seems to work anymore.  We would appreciate any thoughts or ideas.
