Peopletools version different between app and report repository

Can the peopletools version on the report repository be different (Higher) then the application reporting to it? We are working on a Peopletools upgrade and we want to get the initial servers we can upgraded without much developer/user assistance. We are upgrading out PPM servers and some stand along integration gateways first. I was wondering if you can upgrade the report repositories also. We have ours as a seperate weblogic server that only handles repository requests.
