PFT 8.53 - nothing happens during client login

I am trying to get the PTF working with PeopleTools 8.53.14 against my newly upgraded Financials 9.2 database (SQL Server).

I finally got through all the Integration Broker and security setup, past all the different error messages thrown by the PTF client (Windows 8.1) when trying to log in. Now, after I put in my password and click OK, the password disappears (the field is cleared) and nothing happens. The PTF login screen stays visible and that's it. I know communication is working because if I try an invalid password with my User ID, I get the "user password failed" signon error message. I've double checked my IE settings (protected mode, local intranet sites, etc.) and cannot figure out why
