Population Selection and Communication Generation

I am new to "Comm Gen" and I am hoping some of my questions can be answered.

We have a requirement to sent out acknowledgement letters for our applicants. Essentially I have created the population selection query which defines "who" the email will be sent to. But our Business Unit (BU) requires a few rules.

In my query I am including the PS_SCC_PS_ADMP_BND,  PS_ADM_APPL_PROG, PS_ADM_APPL_DATA tables and some others.

1) Is it true that I have to include "specific fields" like  ACAD_CAREER, STDNT_CAR_NBR, ADM_APPL_NBR, APPL_PROG_NBR, INSTITUTION etc. in the query because I am joining on the bind table PS_SCC_PS_ADMP_BND? Or I can include any fields as long as the bind table is used and Comm Gen will work.
