nVision Error when running on the Web - PeopleTools 8.53.11 Upgrade

We have a strange scenario:
Running a layout on the Web and specifying output directory on the Shared Drive e.g. R:\INSTANCE\
The report fails with the following error:
Message Set Number: 28
Message Number: 55
Message Reason: DOS error number 3 occurred while trying to create directory R:\INSTANCE\Trial Balance Report\4744816_0_1. (28,55)
When I change the path in the Scope and Delivery Templates --> to have the UNC path e.g. \\server\share\INSTANCE\ instead of R:\INSTANCE the report executes successfully.
We really need to solve this, because we have quite a few people that access the output by mapping the drive, or they have some other Excel spreadsheets that rely on those directories.
