Advice: Switching Interunit Method from INDIRECT to DIRECT

We have been using INDIRECT method since implementing 9.1 on Jan 1 2012.  We now have a need for more InterUnit templates and it makes sense to use DIRECT method.

I realize this is an Installation option and is not recommended to be changed.  Does anyone have advice or experience?  Is there an Oracle checklist for doing such a change?
