RMAN backup content with disk vs tape

Oracle RDBMS 12.1.0.3 using RMAN

Our RMAN backups write to an NFS-mounted de-duplication appliance.  We are in a staging scenario with an add-on 'boost' product that advertises 50% faster performance for RMAN backups, along with some other benefits.  Our testing has not shown this increase.  In this staging database we have dropped and re-added data, and then dropped again as staging typically does., so a few of the large tablespaces have a low percentage used.  A statement by the vendor is that when writing RMAN backups to disk only blocks of data are written, but when writing to tape the entire datafile is written.
