Are there any techniques for forcing a subscription contract to fail so I can test PT_AMM_WF?

I read document id 1633043.1, but I do not understand how to apply it to force a HIRE_REQUEST or POST_HIRE_REQUEST subscription transaction to fail. I would prefer not to customize PeopleCode.
