How can I use a connected query as a data source on a pagelet?

I currently have a pagelet that uses a query as a data source and provides data for our managers on their direct reports (complements the information that is available thru the dashboard). We would like to enhance it to allow them to drill-down and be able to see indirect reports. We thought that we can use a connected query, however are not able to use it as a data source on the page.
