Size Diffs in Version 14

We are planning our upgrade from RMS versino 10 to RMS version 14.x.   As I was going through some of the documentation, I noticed that there are references to using two diffs (size 1 and size 2) for sizes.  For example, for a Mens Pants size, we can split the size into a diff one of 34Waist and a diff two of 32Length.  In version 10, we concatenated the sizes into one diff of 34W/32L. 

My question is what are the pro(s) and con(s) of splitting the size code into two separate diffs, especially as it relates to Allocate and any external catalog sources for item data?
