Why is the EAN/barcode level information for an item is required??

Hi,

If we have item level 2, in which we have already defined the differentiators for the item(meaning that the item code is unique for the item), why is an additional level of item required??

What i meant is, why the EAN level information is required??

If tran level is 1, then only the item level 1 item code can be used as an unique code. Why is the item level 2 required??

If tran level is 2, then the sku level item (item level 2) is unique enough to make transactions on. Why is the item level 3 required??
