Upgrading to PeopleTools 8.54

I'm going to be doing my first PeopleTools upgrade.  The documentation seems to be mostly clear on database changes (via Change Assistant) but I can't find much information on migrating PS_HOME.  Am I supposed to just copy my current PS_HOME and install 8.54 over it or is there some method to migrate the application files over to the new install?
