Approach for PeopleTools upgrade for PT8.48 on MSSQL 2005 to PT8.54 on MSSQL 2014?

Has anyone upgraded from PT8.48 on MSSQL 2005 to PT8.54 on MSSQL 2014 or 2012?  If so, what was your approach?  Our application is HCM 9.0 and we do not intend to upgrade to HCM 9.2.
