Getting "SMTPSender variable is not configured. (80,9)" when trying to execute TriggerBusinessEvent

These are my steps:

1) Created custom business process, activity, event definition, and email definition.

2) Created custom work record to house workflow TriggerBusinessEvent PeopleCode

3) Created custom page with button that just has DoSave() which triggers the workflow.  Put it in custom component.

4) Proof of concept works and sends email perfectly when button is pressed.  That means all SMTP settings in application server configuration is at least correct for this purpose including the SMTPSender variable.

6) Created custom method called SendNotificationEmail to set fields on component just like when I'm logged into the PIA and does a Save().  This is the error I get when I go to test the component interface.  I run the custom method, enter the parameter and this pops up:
