How to schedule PeopleSoft Query to Excel in a version higher than 97? Unable to open Excel files

We need to be able to schedule queries to email to third parties as well as our own business community.   How can we email these Excel files in a format other than Excel 97-2003?    We are unable to view the Excel files on mobile devices (Android and iPhone) without having to load additional and potentially unsafe software on company devices and customer devices.    Is there any way to specify a setting in PeopleSoft to export the Excel file in a more up to date version of Excel?
