Insert/Enable An Approval Stage Conditionally In Approval Framework

As Approval workflow path for various stages/paths/steps are triggerred at the time a request is submitted for approval. Is there any way to enable/disable a stage conditionally, as the condition which decides the enable/disable is evaluated in the intermediate before the stage in question is triggered.
