Getting error: SES crawler status : Failed , restart AE after resolving the error

When running a SES search I am getting the error SES crawler status : Failed , restart AE after resolving the error.  Found doc ID 1948538.1 that describes the issue.  The suggested resolution is:

A workaround is to replace this special character (Ctrl +A) or any other such control character present in the data with a backend(sql) update.

Issue will be permanently fixed in PeopleTools 8.55, and then backported to PeopleTools 8.53 and 8.54.

What SQL can be used to remove the special characters?  What tables do I need to update?  I get the error on the searches: HC_HRS_APPLICANT  HC_HRS_APP_INDEX
