PeopleTools 8.54 'Tools Only' Upgrade: Demo database

I am in the initial stages of reviewing the PeopleTools 8.54 'Tools Only' Upgrade documentation.

Under Chapter 1: 'Planning Your Upgrade' in the 'Getting Started on your PeopleTools Upgrade' document, it discusses upgrading our Demo database before applying it to other environments.

Now that we are using PUM, is it still necessary to have a Demo database in addition to the PUM Image which is already using Tools 8.54 (PUM 10 and above)?

During our FSCM 9.2 Upgrade back in Aug 2014, one of my final tasks was bringing the FSCM 9.2 Demo database up to PUM 6 which is what we are using in our production environment now.
