Query Manager: In Tree criterion - how to select MAX effdt of the tree?

When I am building a query and using the In Tree criterion to select a range of values on our DEPT tree, I am able to select a single effdt of a tree.  But, how can I set up the query to always select the MAX effdt?  That way, I won't ever have to change the tree I selected in the In Tree criterion.
