Using addattachment in a component interface

Does anyone happen to know if the addattachment peoplecode function could get called from a component interface which would ultimately get called via java api running on a machine that does not have the peoplesoft application server running locally.  We have had success using putattachment but first need to ftp files on to the appserver machine
