TRACE question

We do many traces in our Production. The traces we mostly do are Process traces for batch, and for online processes, we do PeopleTools > Utilities > Debug when we are right before a button push that we want to trace, we turn on our trace so that we get a 'focused' trace.

Are the trace settings in the app server config files relevant for these t kind of traces ?

Why would anyone want to use the trace and tracemask setting?
