Deleting Standard Journals

How can you delete standard journals which were entered in error but have not met the delete criteria to have a status of complete?  How do you get the status to change from active to complete?  I have tried to update the from and to dates with no effect to changing the status.  What are any known risks to consider before deleting a Standard Journal?
