Journal - how to retain and re-calculate fx within same edit

Utilizing the Excel journal upload tool - I create one journal with transaction currency/amount specified only that I want to use the system rate to calculate the base amount, and another journal where I'm specifying the transaction currency/amount and the base currency/amount. Then I run the batch edit process with "recalc exchange rates" on both journals at the same time. The 2nd journal is recalculated to the system rate and doesn't retain the original base amount I specified in my uplaod. How can I edit journals that I want to retain and recalculate within the same edit job?
