PeopleToos only upgrade

Hello All,

We are planning peopletools only upgrade. Below is the our current configuration.

PeopleTools : 8.50.xx

Application (FSCM) : 9.1

I just want want clarify below things.

1) Can i install latest peopletools(8.54) into new PS_HOME and point old application to new PS_HOME and use? or Do I need to upgrade old peopletools to new version.
