using virtualbox with a bridged adapter

What settings are needed for a update image to be accessible on our network?, I tried a bridged adapter, but the image would not start, is there any specific adapter type and what option should be used for the promiscuous mode be used? deny, allow all, allow vm's? Is a second NIC required?
