PS 8.54, nVision - Excel 2010 and .xls

Hello,

We are running PeopleTools 8.54 and Excel 2010.  Some of our nVision layouts are still .xls.  My business partner has attempted to change the color on the .xls layouts and that causes them to error.  Is there a way to save them as .xlsx or .xnv?  He has tried saving the layouts with double quotes: "<Layout Name>.xnv" and that does not work either.
