PeopleTools Upgrade to 8.55

Hi,

we are planning to do a tools only upgrade to 8.55 from 8.53.

what is the best approach to take from the below.

1) upgrade window servers and db servers to windows 2012 from 2008 and do an installation

2) bring new servers and do the tools upgrade sepeate from the current servers.

Please let me know if i can go through any documentation  to understand the above two methods and choose how to proceed and understand pros and cons.
