Can I stop referrals for a single user on all searches

Hi all,

First time poster, long time lurker.  I have a connundrum to solve.  I have to stop a single user (a service account) from chasing referrals on a search. 

I have 2 options of how to cut out the referral following (as I see it): At the search application or at the server. 

1) The service account is an OUD Proxy account for a proxied server.  I cannot find how to change the internal searches to tell them not to follow referrals when processing identity mapping, pass through authentication joins.

2) Set controls on the service account at the server so that referrals are not chased via an ACI or some other control.
