TimeOut settings in PeopleTools 8.55.04 / Weblogic 12.1.3.0.0

When you change Inactivity logout in the webprofile, do you have to make corresponding change in web.xml (session-timeout or max_inactive_interval parameters) ? I always thought it was required but I could not find any supporting document. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
