Does MQ Client software need to be installed on our server for messaging with third party using IBM

I found a document that seems to imply we need MQ Client software installed on our server in order to send/receive messages with a third party using IBM MQ. The document is named "Configuring Integration Broker with IBM MQ on AIX" .  Were on Linux. Not sure if that matters.  We also use weblogic.  I believe MQ is a websphere product. Thanks in advance.
