Approval Framework, Approval Path Definition and User Profile Alternate Approver

Does the Approval Step Definition, Approval Role Name prohibit a designated Alternate Workflow User from performing the approval if the Alternate User does not have the Role that is designated in Approval Step Definition?

Scenario:

1. The Approval Step Definition has the Approver Role Name populated in the Approval Framework. 

2. The Approver Role Name and the Approver User List are the same value.

3.  The User List is defined by a query. 

4.  User ID is added via the User Profile>Workflow>Workflow Attributes to perform workflow approval for a designated period of time and the Alternate User ID does not have the Role assigned that is in the Approval Step Definition>Approval Role Name.
