How can I improve the formatting of the email text in Generic Templates

Under PeopleTools > WorkFlow > Notifications > Generic Templates the content of the emails automatically sent via Approval Framework are maintainable, however, the text is in plain text with the variables allowed per the underlying query.

Sadly to format them so the line up nicely you have to put space characters between the text and variable, however, this is inconsistent in layout and looks poor to the recipient as some characters are wider than others e.g. W and I. Further I'd prefer to hide the generated URL behind a click here text or similar

I attempted to put HTML code in the Message Text box but this just displays the html tags as plain text and makes the message look even worse for the recipient.
