What limitations are there on copying/comparing projects between Tools 8.55 and 8.53?

We are in the process of planning our Tools only upgrade for our HCM 9.2 application from 8.53.27 to 8.55.12. I know that the recommendation is that no development should be done during the upgrade, but if we are faced with making an urgent code update what limitations are there on copying/comparing projects between Tools 8.55 and 8.53?

Would we be able to create a project in a lower non-prod environment (8.55) and be able to compare and copying to a higher environment still at 8.53?  Can that only be done via Copy To File?  If so, are there some objects that can't be copied by file?
