Newbie questions about using PUM and PIs to perform an upgrade

We're beginning a FSCM upgrade project from v9.0/8.52.10 to v9.2.  I am very familiar with the installation and upgrade processes prior to PUM.  I thought I had a good general understanding of the new methodologies but, after reading a great deal of material about PUM and PIs on the support site, in the community, and watching a couple advisor webcasts, I am actually more confused about where to begin, and with what than I was prior to doing the research.  (fwiw, the Chat Q/A for PUM Top Topics located here is the single best doc I've found so far)
